Onyekachi Wambu – AFFORD

Onyekachi Wambu has worked in a number of roles for AFFORD and is currently Engagement and Policy Director at the charity, which works to extend and enhance the role the diaspora play in African development. A former print journalist he has also worked as a television producer/director for the BBC and C4. He is a trustee of Fahamu and his publications include ‘Under the Tree of Talking – Leadership for Change in Africa’.

Gibril Faal

Gibril Faal - AFFORD

Gibril Faal is the chairman of the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD); founder of RemitAid™ – a programme to transform remittances into a sustainable form of international development finance using tax reliefs and other macroeconomic policies; and director of GK Partners – a UK-based company that advises socially responsible businesses on ethical business models, social enterprise, legal structures, ethical and Islamic finance, corporate responsibility etc. He is a board member of the EC-UN Joint Migration & Development Initiative (JMDI); board member of DFID’s Global Poverty Action Fund (GPAF); special adviser to the Institute of Islamic Banking & Insurance.

Hadeel Ibrahim

Hadeel Ibrahim – Mo Ibrahim Foundation

Hadeel Ibrahim is the founding Executive Director of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, which was established in 2006 to support great African leadership. In addition to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Hadeel is a member the Boards of Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice, the Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (UONGOZI Institute) in Tanzania and Carter Center UK. Hadeel is a Trustee of the Museum for African Art in New York and a Patron of Restless Development, a youth led development agency. She previously spent time with the Africa Section of Actis Private Equity Investors and with EMP Africa. She was formerly a Board Member of Refugees International and of LEAP (UK). Hadeel has a degree from Bristol University in Politics and Philosophy.

James Nyoro

James Nyoro – Rockefeeler Foundation

James Nyoro joined the Rockefeller Foundation in 2008. As Managing Director, Africa, he is based in Nairobi, Kenya. His responsibilities include overseeing Foundation work across Africa, strengthening and complementing the Foundation’s initiatives around the globe. Prior to joining the Foundation, James was executive director of Egerton University’s Tegemeo Institute, a Nairobi-based policy think tank. In this role he identified policy needs and developed research themes for African governments and private sector partners. He also participated in the formulation of various government development strategies such as the Kenya Vision 2030, a long-term, national strategy to spur prosperity and global competitiveness. He has also served in several government appointed task forces to address challenges in agricultural and rural development in the region. James has a degree in Agriculture from University of Nairobi and a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Wye College, University of London

Cathy Pharoah

Cathy Pharoah – CASS Business School, City University

Cathy Pharoah is Professor of Charity Funding and Co-Director of the ESRC Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy, Cass Business School (CGAP). She produced the annual Charity Market Monitor, updating figures on the finances of the UK’s top 500 fundraising charities, and the annual Family Foundation Giving report, with the Pears Foundation. She also recently published research on ‘Global Grantmaking’ by foundations, supported by Nuffield, Baring and Hamlyn Foundations, and is currently studying remittance giving, supported by Trust for London. Cathy was Director of Research at Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) for 11 years. She is a founder member and Assistant Editor of Voluntary Sector Review, and presents widely on giving and philanthropy.
